@allone: Slechte dozent.

Maar als ik de schrijfsels van veel collega's op de school van mijn lief zie langskomen, is dit meer regel dan uitzondering, vrees ik.

Nu is een kofschip nogal ruim gebouwd, dus daar kun je m.i. prima in dansen.

Voor @venzje.. alleen weet je dit misschien allang :D :

Why is slaughter pronounced like it is spelled slahter, but laughter is pronounced like it is spelled lafter?

I’m going to need to be irrelevant for a moment.

Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous painters to have ever lived.

He spent most of his life in France, but as anyone who’s spent ten minutes learning French can guess, “van Gogh” is not a French name. Rather, it’s Dutch, as he was born in the Netherlands.

“Van Gogh” has two pronunciations in English: “van Goff” in Britain and “van Go” in America. Neither is “correct”, however: it’s supposed to be pronounced like this. Notice that weird noise at the end of his last name? That’s the connection “slaughter” has to “laughter”.

I present to you, the German throaty noise, the voiceless velar fricative: /x/

It’s one of the most common sounds in European languages and features extensively in English’s closest relatives: Scots, Frisian, Dutch, and German. English, too, used to have the sound.

The Latin alphabet was designed for Latin, which it did a good job of spelling. But Latin didn’t have a lot of the sounds English did, so to represent those sounds, there are three options:

invent a new letter, eg. “ß” or “j”
add a fancy line, eg. “é”
put two letters next to one another, eg. “ch”

English prefers the third option, and so we spell /ʃ/ with “sh”, /tʃ/ with “ch”, and /θ/ and /ð/ with “th”.

Dutch uses the letter “g” to represent the /x/ sound, which works because Dutch has no “g” sound like we do in English. But English does have a “g” sound, so we went for the next-best option and used “gh” to represent /x/.

And then we lost that sound.

There are two main things that happened with the sound:

the sound disappeared entirely, like in “though”, “thought”, “yacht”, or “slaughter”
the sound was replaced with an “f”, like in “tough”, “draught”, and “laughter”

That’s why I mentioned van Gogh: his name is a perfect illustration of how English pronunciation deals with the /x/ sound. Some words dropped the /x/, as in the American “van Go”; some replaced it with “f”, like the British “van Goff”.

But the spelling remained the same, leading to the silent letters we have now in “brought” and the seemingly random “f” in “cough”.

This sort of thing happens a lot. If you’d like to learn more about it, I’m currently working on a book about it, but until that’s out, Kevin Stroud’s History of English Podcast is an excellently-done and layman’s-language story of English’s journey from the Eurasian steppes to the internet.
